10 of the Best Home Improvement Shows To Stream Today
4 commentsSpending more time at home has motivated many of us to fix the shortcomings of our dwellings. It could be as simple as updating that paint color in your home office. Or maybe it’s finally time to ditch the tired carpeting and refinish your wood floors.
If you’ve got a project in mind, you’re not alone. More than 40% of consumers have put DIY home improvement plans on the calendar, according to NPD Group. While a quick Pinterest or Houzz search will turn up plenty of inspiration, rolling up your sleeves and bringing the look to life is easier when you see how others have lived through it.
Fortunately, there’s a home improvement show for every style that can provide you with inspiration and education. Here is a selection to stream:
If your style is farmhouse
“Fixer Upper: Welcome Home”
When Chip and Joanna Gaines’ show “Fixer Upper” launched on HGTV in 2013, the couple’s modern farmhouse style instantly clicked with homeowners across the country. After they called it quits in 2018, fans wanted more. Thankfully, the Gaines are back with “Fixer Upper: Welcome Home,” offering more of the design advice we fell in love with. The show will air on Gaines’ Magnolia Network, set to launch in 2022 (but now streaming with the Magnolia app). Until then, you can stream it on Discovery+.

If your style is traditional
“This Old House”
Before Chip and Joanna Gaines, Bob Vila ruled the home improvement circuit on the PBS-produced “This Old House.” In this series, which premiered in 1979 and is now in season 42, you’ll find homes of various sizes and styles to help inspire your own renovation. The common thread is that they’re usually old and brought up to date inside and out.

If your style is eclectic
“Trading Spaces”
The premise of “Trading Spaces” is that two sets of neighbors redecorate a room in each other’s homes with a $2,000 budget and the help of a professional designer. It originally aired on TLC more than two decades ago, then took a decade-long break, relaunching in 2018. This show offers lots of DIY inspiration, as you watch nonprofessionals tackle projects. Each room usually includes a made-from-scratch project, with the help of a handyman.

“Flip or Flop”
Flipping houses requires an ability to see past what’s there and envision what’s possible. On “Flip or Flop,” former husband and wife Tarek El Moussa and Christina Haack find the worst home in the best neighborhood, then renovate and sell it. The couple divorced in 2017, but they continue to do the show together. As maximizing profits is key for flipping success, viewers get tips on where to save without sacrificing style.

If your style is minimalistic
“Life Uncontained”
You may have heard of container homes, but have you ever wondered how those large crates go from shipping boxes to beautiful dwellings? “Life Uncontained” follows DIY couple Mackenzie and Spenser, who decided to go off the grid, move to Texas and create their dream home out of two large shipping containers. Unlike many design shows that complete a transformation in days, “Life Uncontained” is a work in progress. The couple has been on a three-year journey—and it’s not done quite yet.
